CHARACTER
NAME: Joanna Beth Harvelle
AGE: 24
CANON: Supernatural
CANON TYPE: TV series
BACKGROUND: In Nevada, on a rainy evening in April, Ellen Harvelle gave birth to a blonde baby girl which she and her husband, William Anthony named Joanna Beth. Though she didn't know it at the time, Jo was born to two hunters, though, with the birth of Jo, Ellen let hunting take a back seat to running The Roadhouse and taking care of Jo. Growing up in a bar filled with hunters, Jo learned the truth in the world at a very young age. She'd come running to her father every time her returned home from a hunt and beg him to tell her everything. She'd do the same thing with any of the other hunters. Even then, she knew she wanted to be a hunter when she grew up. At the age of eight, she began to put this plan into action, changing the diary her mother gave her for her birthday into a Hunter's Journal. In it, she put every bit of information she could find or remember. Which, when you're eight, isn't very much. Her plans were helped along however, by her various "uncles" that came to visit at The Roadhouse.
When Jo was ten, disaster rocked her world. After a particularly difficult hunt with her "uncle" John Winchester, her father didn't return. Told that her father was a hero and that he had died in action, Jo was unable to tell anyone this at school. She became the weird girl at school, the one without a dad, and because of this, she withdrew, claiming that homework and school was 'stupid' because it wasn't going to protect them from the bad things out in the world. If she hadn't decided to be a hunter by then, the death of her father only solidified her desire to do so.
Her mother decided, however, she wasn't responding well to the death of her father, and began to worry about her. Especially after one particular incident at school where a boy had been harassing her. Tired of it, Jo turned around and swung at him, landing a punch right in his jaw. Ellen and her "uncle" Shawn rushed to the school to speak with the principal while an irritated Jo waited outside. She was awarded a few detentions and really thought nothing of it. Her mother was furious, but Shawn later told her she had one hell of a right hook and that he wanted to train her. Jo leaped at the chance. Together, Shawn began to teach her some basic combat skills, and taught her how to work with the bow and arrow set her father had given her for her eighth birthday. Shortly after, a new hunter arrived at the bar, introducing himself as Gordon Walker. Being younger than the other hunters, Jo was instantly drawn towards Gordon, and found comfort in the fact that he treated her like an adult, like a real hunter, and told her everything she wanted to know. At the time, both Jo and Ellen considered him to be one of the better hunters out there, and Jo believed this even more so because of how Gordon treated her. She enjoyed their talks and the way he tried to scare her. It didn't take long for her to ask him to start training her, and thankfully, Gordon agreed. She was thirteen at the time.
Continuing her training, Jo became even more anxious to hunt. She found herself asking more and more hunters if she could go along with them, but each of them, prompted by the watchful eye and fearsome wrath of Ellen, all denied her. But that didn't stop Jo. Finally, she got up the nerve and asked Gordon to take her along, after quite a few remarks on his end about how she was a 'hunter who wasn't allowed to hunt'. When she asked him, Gordon smiled, asked her what took her so long and that was that. Lying to her mother, Jo told her that she was spending the night at a friend's from school, but snuck off with Gordon instead. Together, the two made their way to an abandoned factory where Gordon believed a Rawhead was using. After a stakeout lasting four hours, Gordon claimed he heard a noise, and snuck off to investigate it, leaving Jo alone. Jo waited in the dark for god-knows how long for him before she heard a noise right next to her. Freaking out, she ran out of there as fast as she could, but not before running right into her mother. As it turned out, Ellen had found out about their plan, and had tracked them down. Calling an end to the chase, she drove Jo and Gordon back to the Roadhouse, before yelling at them both, in turn. At the end of it, Jo was in tears, humiliated and no longer allowed to leave the Roadhouse, except for school and the library. Gordon was no longer allowed within 20 feet of her, and banned from the Roadhouse.
After six months of this ridiculous grounding, Jo found a silver lining. A new hunter had showed up at the bar named Ash. Though she declared him Nowhere Near As Cool As Gordon, she found herself spending a lot of time with him. Ash was funny, and very intuitive. Deciding that, if she wasn't allowed out on the hunt, Jo was going to continue her training in all aspects. And that included Ash teaching her everything he knew. With unlimited computer access, Jo scoured the web for any bit of information she could find, while continuing her training with Shawn. All the while, she was secretly communicating with Gordon over email.
Finally, after begging her mother, Ellen finally allowed Jo to go on her first real hunt. The night of her eighteenth birthday, Jo set out with Shawn and Jake Riley to investigate a local poltergeist. It was a pretty standard investigation, so the men allowed Jo to get in on the action, letting her get a real feel for it. She was even allowed to interview a young girl who had been particularly haunted by the poltergeist. Soon enough, the three of them solved the case. Unfortunately, this did nothing to quell Jo's taste for action. In fact, it made it worse. Over the next six months, she went out on a few more hunts, but the boys at the Roadhouse seemed far too reluctant to take her along. Except for one. A new hunter by the name of Rick Benton. Rick was a few years older than her, and far more than happy to take her along on hunts with him. After one particularly difficult case involving a Demon and an exorcism, both were feeling the high from solving the case. One thing lead to another, and Jo was happy to flounce back to the Roadhouse with her new boyfriend in tow.
For the next nine months, the two worked together whenever they could, though Jo was always held back on more difficult cases and overnight ones both by her mother, who claimed that, as bartender to The Roadhouse, her duty was to the bar first, and the fact that she had chosen to attend a local college. This kept Jo from accompanying Rick on one particularly nasty case. The details of it, she doesn't know, nor does she particularly want to know. All Jo is aware of is that he never returned, and never bothered to get in touch with her. Choosing to believe that he died rather than that he had simply decided to up and leave her, Jo mourned, and tried desperately to get back into contact with Gordon, thinking he'd have something to say on the subject matter. Gordon, however, never responded to her emails.
Soon after Rick's alleged death, Jo dropped out of college. She didn't want to be there in the first place, and she explained that she was tired of being considered 'a freak with the knife collection'. Ellen, understandably, was less than happy. Once more, Jo was stuck in The Roadhouse as all the hunters were once again reluctant to bring her out with them on hunts. Subsequently, she was stuck there for long, dry stunts. During one of these, two boys a few years older than her entered the bar. Thinking they were intruders, she grabbed the shotgun from behind the bar, but was quickly disarmed by the shorter, but much cuter, of the two intruders. Jo responded as anyone naturally would and punched him in the face. It was then that Ellen entered and explained to her who these two boys were: Sam and Dean Winchester. Her "Uncle" John's sons. Seeing that they weren't much older than her and were out fulfilling their father's legacy, Jo's desire for the hunt was once again revived, and with a little help from Ash, snuck out after them on a case her mother had deliberately given to the boys. Unfortunately, her attempts at the hunt turned sour as she found herself kidnapped by the ghost of Dr. H. H. Holmes. After being rescued by the Winchester Boys, she refused to give up, and helped them trap and capture the ghost. Against her best wishes, the boys quickly returned her to the Roadhouse where Ellen revealed to her for the first time that her father had been killed while hunting with John Winchester.
Upset that this had been hidden from her for so long, Jo took off, anxious to become a hunter on her own. She made her way to Duluth, Minnesota where she began to investigate, while working as a bartender in a local bar. One night as she was closing up, Sam Winchester entered. Unbeknownst to her, he was possessed by Meg. After teasing her mercilessly about her crush on Dean, Sam took her hostage, telling her his own version of how her father had died: that John Winchester had shot him in the head to put him out of his misery. Jo didn't know which version to believe, but her thoughts were put on hold as Dean arrived. Dean's arrival distracted Sam and allowed Dean to help free her. However, Sam soon shot Dean and left. Concerned for Dean because, yes, what Sam said was true, Jo pursued him, and found him half-drowned. After some quick patching up, she demanded Dean take her with him to go hunt Sam. Dean refused, and after alerting Ellen to where she was, Jo was forced to return back to the Roadhouse. The Roadhouse, however, was not returned to for long. Soon after her return, the bar was destroyed by demons. Since then, Ellen has realized the two have nowhere else to go, and has picked up her old shotgun. The two have since been seen on the road, working in a few bars along the way to make money and investigate some local cases, but never staying in any place for long. And you know what? Jo's happy to be on the road. Even if Ellen still doesn't like her taking part in the hunts, and tries to stop her whenever she can.
Eventually, the two ran into Dean and Sam once more. After fighting against each other as mother and daughter, each believing the other to be possessed by demons, the two Harvelle women joined Dean, Sam, Bobby and the angel Castiel in what was sure to be a final battle.
CANON POINT: The morning of the final battle. So, mid-Abandon All Hope
WORLD INFORMATION: Jo grew up in a world that was unlike any other. Though it was very much the world we live in on the outside, she grew up knowing that the monsters under the bed were real, and her parents were the type that fought them. Her world has been filled with demons, ghosts, and the normal sort of thing that haunts your nightmares. But it's all very real to her. And, last time she checked, Angels walked among them in addition to the demons, and the Apocalypse was steadily drawing near.
PERSONALITY: Though she doesn't look like much, Jo is not the type of girl you want to mess with. She's spent the majority of her life around hunters, and in a bar, so if that doesn't tell you something, well, you'll quickly learn. Ever since she was little Jo has been more likely to punch a guy in the face than actually sit down and have a decent conversation. That's not to say she's incapable of conversation. In fact, she likes talking. She just tends to ask first and ask questions later, believing that being on the other side of that will only get you hurt. She can throw one hell of a punch, too, and just so you know, she's pretty good both with a bow and arrow and with a gun.
Jo is determined, that's one thing anyone can tell you about her within seconds of meeting her. Ever since she was little she's know what she wants to do with her life, and that's one thing and one thing only: hunt. Her father and mother were both hunters, though her mother mostly managed The Road House. Since she can remember she's been asking every patron of the bar that she can what they know, asking them to tell her about their cases, and in some instances, teach her how to hunt. Since then, she's read every book she can on the subject and though she's very experienced in the book-work, she lacks the experience in the field. That's not so say she hasn't been in the field, because she has, but field work and book work are two drastically different things. Her determined nature often comes out in a reckless nature. She's the first to jump into the fire head first if she thinks it's going to help. She's also one of those act first, think later type of people. It's gotten her into trouble before, but nothing she can't handle. At least, if you ask her.
Jo will be the first to tell you that her mother is quite overbearing at times. She recognizes that Ellen loves her, but she just has a funny way of showing it. She likes to try to keep her tied down, when Jo wants nothing more than to go out on the road and help. She can handle herself, as she will tell her mother repeatedly. She's 21, after all and has lived in a bar her entire life. The "Bad Men" in the world don't have anything on her, and demons best beware. This independent streak of hers tends to manifest itself in different ways, from directly disobeying her mother's wishes to even running away to achieve her dreams. Jo's just confident that no matter what she does, her mother will always love her. And she'll always love her mother.
Beware however, as nice as Jo can, because she really is a nice girl-- you have to be nice if you work as a bartender/waitress-- is she's quick to anger. Piss her off, and you'll find yourself on the wrong end of her fist, shotgun, or even some nasty words pointed in your direction. She doesn't care who you are, if you piss her off, you're going to regret it, the sooner, the better.
There's another thing you should know about Jo: Don't underestimate her. She's been underestimated her entire life, and just because she's small doesn't mean she won't kick your ass. Or, attempt to. She still has quite a lot to learn, and she's anxious to learn it. Even if she thinks she knows everything from time to time. But Jo wants everyone to know she's capable if they just give her something to work with. She's a tough girl, and has spent the majority of her life trying to play with the big boys. Now that she's fully grown, she won't let anything stop her.

SAMPLES
FIRST PERSON: [A petite blonde woman appears on the screen, rubbing at her head. This is Jo Harvelle. And she is. Hungover.][She frowns.] I woke up on the couch, went into the bathroom and the next thing I know, dizzy city and I'm here in freaking London. Is this some sorta trap or something? Because really, mom, if you and Castiel came up with something to try to get me out of the fight, I'm going to find a way outta here, and I'm really gonna hand it to you when I get home. I thought you'd come to grips with me fighting, but, apparently, not.
[She mutters darkly.] Thanks for treating me like an adult. [An eye-roll.] So, hi. I'm [Errr… The Welcomer guy knew who she was. But she doesn't trust this place. Fake name time. Time to think of something clever.] Kate Morissette. [Combination of Kate Bush and Alanis Morissette. She thinks it's appropriate.] Anyone who isn't this welcoming guy wanna explain to me what's going on? I'm new in town. Obviously. [Okay. She has a lot to learn about the hunting thing, still. At least on her own. But it's progress. And that's what matters. Also getting home and saving the world is important.]
THIRD PERSON: Somehow, Jo managed to get herself a job. Apparently petite bartenders are in high demand around here, and who was she to complain? But tonight is her first night on the job at this pub called, Domus of Oriens. From her limited Latin, she was able to translate it with a smile. The House of the Rising Sun. Granted, it was in Londonium and not New Orleans, but it made her smile all the same.
Situated behind the bar, she leaned on her elbows, surveying the crowd. They all appeared to be normal, ordering beer and cider, occasionally something more interesting, like food. Lots of chips and crisps, which, after a few tutorials, she'd managed to get across that chips are fries and crisps are chips. London was weird.
The jukebox was playing some song that sounded vaguely familiar, and she absentmindedly tapped her fingers against the bar, her eyes scanning the bar, waiting for someone to try to flag her down. At least this job tipped well. Then again, everything tipped better than the Roadhouse. Because, apparently, when your mom owned the place, tipping was a sign that they were interested in you. Here, well, no one was going to be threatened by Ellen Harvelle. Just Jo. And even so, the customers here were nothing she couldn't handle. She still had her dad's iron knife in her boot, after all, and a gun in her locker in the back. Just in case things got bad. And considering the mysterious circumstances of all of this, she really couldn't be too careful.
